About the Attraction
WLI WATERFALLS: WHERE NATURE MEETS LEGEND
Nestled in the heart of the Agumatsa Forest Reserve and Conservation Area in Ghana’s Volta Region lies one of West Africa’s most spectacular natural attractions—Wli Waterfalls.
Rising majestically from the lush forest landscape, Wli is widely regarded as the highest waterfall in West Africa, offering visitors an unforgettable encounter with nature, adventure and local folklore.
But Wli is more than a waterfall.
WATERFALL WRAPPED IN LEGEND
For generations, the waterfall has been surrounded by fascinating local stories and beliefs. One enduring legend holds that Wli is an oracle of nature—that the intensity of the waterfall responds to human activity.
According to local folklore, the louder and more active visitors become at the foot of the falls, the greater the volume and force of the water appears to be.
Whether you experience it as folklore, mystery or simply one of nature’s wonders, standing beneath the towering cascade is an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
THE LOWER FALLS: BEAUTY WITHIN REACH
The Lower Falls is the more accessible of the two waterfalls and is ideal for visitors looking for an exhilarating but relatively easy nature experience.
The journey takes you through the beautiful forest landscape, including several crossings of the Agumatsa River along the trail. Depending on pace and trail conditions, the trek can take approximately 30 minutes to an hour.
Then, through the trees, the sound of rushing water grows louder until the spectacular Lower Falls suddenly comes into view.
At the base is a natural plunge pool, offering visitors the opportunity to cool off and swim while surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of the forest.
THE UPPER FALLS: THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE
For those seeking a greater challenge, the Upper Falls is where the real adventure begins.
Reaching the Upper Falls requires approximately two hours of strenuous climbing and trekking through challenging forest terrain. The journey demands stamina, determination and proper footwear—but every difficult step is rewarded.
At the summit, the reward is extraordinary: a spectacular view of the waterfall and the surrounding forest landscape that makes the long climb worthwhile.
Like the Lower Falls, the Upper Falls also features a natural pool at its base, creating another opportunity for a refreshing swim after the demanding trek.
WHERE WILDLIFE COMES ALIVE
The waterfalls are only part of the Wli experience.
Along the surrounding cliffs, visitors can witness large colonies of bats hanging from the rock faces, creating one of the area's most fascinating wildlife spectacles.
And if you are fortunate, you may encounter some of the forest's other inhabitants—including baboons, antelopes, colourful butterflies and a remarkable variety of indigenous flora and fauna.
Every trail holds the possibility of another discovery.
AN EXPERIENCE BEYOND THE WATERFALL
A visit to Wli is not simply a trip to see a waterfall. It is an immersion into a landscape where forest, wildlife, adventure, culture and legend come together.
From the gentle beauty of the Lower Falls to the demanding climb toward the Upper Falls, Wli offers something for every kind of traveller.
Come for the waterfall.

And leave with a memory of one of Ghana's most extraordinary natural treasures.
