Mount Afadjato

Mount Afadjato is one of Ghana’s most famous natural landmarks and is often described as the country’s tallest and most iconic mountain. Rising above the surrounding landscape in the Volta Region, it offers sweeping views of rolling hills, nearby villages and the lush forest below.

The name “Afadjato” is believed to come from the Ewe words “Avadzeto” or “Afadzato,” often interpreted as “mountain of lumps” or “mountain at war,” reflecting both its rugged shape and the stories that surround it.

The hike to the summit is steep but rewarding. The trail leads through farmlands and patches of forest, with sections that require steady footing and patience. Along the way, you may spot butterflies, birds and unique plant life that thrive in the area’s microclimate.

At the top, the view opens up to reveal a dramatic panorama of the Volta highlands and the borderlands with Togo. On a clear day, the scenery stretches far into the distance, making the climb feel truly worthwhile.
