About the Attraction
TAFI ATOME MONKEY SANCTUARY
Where People, Culture and Nature Live Together
In the heart of Ghana’s Volta Region lies Tafi Atome, a traditional Guan community surrounded by Ewe communities in the Afadzato South District.
For generations, the people of Tafi have lived in harmony with the natural environment around them. But there is something particularly special about this community: the monkeys are not simply visitors to the village—they are part of it.
A Community and Its Monkeys
Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary was established in 1993 with guidance from the Peace Corps, developing into a remarkable example of community-based ecotourism.
At the centre of the sanctuary are the playful Mona monkeys, which are protected by the community and regarded as an important part of the village's heritage.
Here, the relationship between people and wildlife is different.
The monkeys move freely through their natural environment, while the community plays an important role in protecting their habitat. For visitors, this creates an unforgettable opportunity to experience wildlife not from behind a fence, but as part of a living community landscape.
More Than a Monkey Sanctuary
A visit to Tafi Atome is not only about seeing monkeys.
It is an opportunity to discover the life, culture and traditions of the Tafi people.
Walk through the community. Meet local people. Learn about their relationship with the forest and wildlife. Listen to their stories. Experience their traditions.
And, of course, keep your eyes on the trees—you may find one of Tafi's famous Mona monkeys watching you too.
The sanctuary provides local guides who lead visitors through the forest and explain the history of the community, the monkeys and the conservation efforts that have helped protect this unique environment.
The Spirit of Sankofa
Tafi Atome captures the very essence of Sankofa: looking to the past, understanding what our ancestors valued, and carrying that wisdom into the future.
The story of Tafi reminds us that conservation does not always begin with modern technology or complicated systems.
Sometimes, it begins with a community understanding that what lives around us is also part of who we are.
The people of Tafi have turned that relationship into an experience that visitors from Ghana and around the world can discover.
